Suzuki piano recital at Sea Pines Montessori Academy highlights importance of music for children

“Memorizing pieces of music helps children develop skills important for academics. Researcher Glenn Schellenberg of the University of Toronto, Mississauga, has shown in the Journal of Education Science that children who learn how to play musical instruments experience a rise in IQ (intelligence quotient). Gottfried Schlaug and his colleagues at the Music and Neuroimaging Laboratory at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School are studying the long-term effects of instrumental training on brain development. Schalug and coworkers have already seen changes in brain structure as well as improved cognitive and verbal skills after studying children over the past few years.”
