Head of School - many important dates. Please read!
SPMA students Amelie Ratliff (violin, age 8) and Harrison Luba (piano, age 9) play Simple Gifts (Jim Brickman and Dan Shea arrangement) at the start of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra Finale on Monday, May 6, 2013.
Wednesday, May 8th is National Bike to School Day! We’d love to see you arrive in the morning pedaling down the school road!
Parents, Runners, Future Runners –
The SPMA cross country team is looking for every 8-14 year old student interested in running with his or her friends in one of the most beautiful training areas in the country!
Our spring practice session will take place mornings and afternoons beginning Thursday, 09 May 2013.

The SPMA cross country program provides a great sense of personal achievement, team camaraderie, and mutual encouragement – this spring training is for all those interested in trying or training for the fall season; training for other sports; or, general fitness (Parents, Guests, and SPMA Staff are welcome to join us!)
We ask only for a true effort from all participants and your support as parents to help the students get to our practices on time and ready to run!
The planned practice schedule for the remainder of the 2013 school year is as follows (all dates in May)(attendance at every practice is encouraged but NOT mandatory):
Thu 09 (6:50 – 7:50 AM)
Tue 14 (3:20 – 4:20 PM)
Wed 15 (3:20 – 4:20 PM)
Thu 16 (6:50 – 7:50 AM)
Tue 21 (3:20 – 4:20 PM)
Wed 22 (3:20 – 4:20 PM)
Thu 23 (6:50 – 7:50 AM)
Tue 28 (3:20 – 4:20 PM)
Wed 29 (3:20 – 4:20 PM)
Thu 30 (6:50 – 7:50 AM)
We utilize SCISA guidelines on Heat Related Illness & Athletic Participation and a smartphone app that pulls data from the NOAA on our location’s current heat index to provide appropriate guidance for practices.
All Student Athletes should arrive to practice on time and dressed appropriately. Students should bring water; pre/post-practice snack; and, a change of clothes for the school day (Thursday morning). A sport towel and deodorant are strongly encouraged!
Any pre-practice food should be kept to a minimum (i.e. ½ whole wheat & peanut butter toast/bagel, or ½ banana, etc.) consumed more than 30 minutes before running commences.
We will be training on sand, dirt, grass, and forest trails – therefore, it will be necessary to have (2) pairs of shoes – one for practice and a second pair for the classroom.
Current best practice for youth footwear indicates that ‘less is better’ – allowing the foot to strengthen appropriately. Basically, it would be best to minimize the ‘heel-to-toe drop’ or the incline plane under the foot – examples of this type of shoe include: New Balance Minimus, Nike Zoom Waffle or Jana Star (NO SPIKES), Adidas Samba, and Converse Chuck Taylor (with laces.) In the end, any athletic shoe will be fine.
If you should ever have any questions, comments, or concerns do not hesitate to email John Dogger.
Congrats to Phillip Evans who came in 3rd in the SCISA State Finals as an 8th Grader running a 5:07 in the 1600M State final with a 30 knot wind!!!
Go SPMA!!

A lot of firsts!
Congratulations to all on the near completion of SPMA’s first Screen-Free Week! It was great to receive so many pledges– nearly 30%! Thank you for joining us for so many events.
In addition to our first Screen-Free week here, it was also my first:
-Violin recital (group)! My first actual recital was Harrison Luba’s individual piano one this past summer. It brought tears to my eyes. Tuesday’s recital was no different. Kudos on a job well done to all of our violin and piano players! On a side note, Amelie Ratliff and Harrison Luba have been invited to play in Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra’s Season Finale on Monday evening. I am so proud of our talented students– good luck!
-Taste of Montessori Mint ice cream! Yum!
-Completion of 3 novels not read during the summer! See how great Screen Free week can be?!?! Don’t forget to record you and your child’s books on our list in the lobby. When we reach 100 books, I’ll donate $100 to the school.
-Edit of a yearbook. Our school’s is beautiful and I’m excited for my first! Thank you to Carla Golden for all her hard work on this. If you still haven’t ordered yours, the form is available on our website.
The end of the year will be a busy one! Please bear with us as we try to communicate all of the upcoming events. A small one takes place this Wednesday, May 8th: National Bike To School Day! We hope to see a lot of riders out there!
Have a wonderful weekend. “Do more… Watch less… Together!”
Cheerfully,
Melinda
